Publishing Innovation Awards: 11 Days in May

We did it! A collection of people who are publishers (Waterfront Digital Press), a writer (me), an ebook technology platform developer (VOOK), and a software developer (Democrasoft), who had never met face to face, created an ebook that won the 2012 Publishing Industry Innovation of the Year Award for the best non-fiction enhanced eBook! How exactly does that work? It's as easy as 1 2 3.
Step 1: You do what you love and love what you do.
None of us intended to, or were aiming for, an innovation of the year.
Instead, we were all passionate about what we were doing and we used our essence to do what we loved, not for fame, forture or glory, but just because we loved doing it.
What that means is, it was an accident. Most great innovations are just that. Something that is stumbled upon and not even recognized until someone points it out.
Step 2: We used the magic formula for innovating
Having been involved in many innovations over the years, I long ago recognized the secret recipe that makes an innovation come to life. It involves 1/3 inspiration and 2/3 perspiration, or 1/3 creativity from the heart and 2/3 ingenuity from the head.
Step 3: We added new value in a new way
This was a linear innovation, the combination of things that existed separately before but when combined, created new value in a new way. What did we combine? We took a book (11 Days in May) and added art from Barry Mack, music from Stephen Lyons, my CNN radio shows and the two-way interactive collaboration tool called WeJIT. All the elements supported the message and story and created a total immersion experience--words, music, art, audio and interactivity--which allows the reader to not only read the words, but hear, feel and share the experience.

I highly recommend an iPad as the best device...
